Huawei P50 Pocket: premium jewelry with a flexible display

Before Christmas, Huawei managed to present its first ever clamshell smartphone with a flexible display. While the Mate X folding smartphone model line is designed primarily for productive managers, the just-revealed Huawei P50 Pocket will find its place in women’s handbags. This is a product on the border between a smartphone and jewelry.

Huawei P50 Pocket: a jewel or a phone?

Although the new novelty refers to the summer line of Huawei P50 smartphones, its design is only partially in line with it. The back is also dominated by a pair of circles, but the special 3D relief in glass is even more interesting – in white it is supposed to resemble diamonds, in the premium gold edition by the designer Iris Van Herpenpak the structure of the leaves. For gentlemen, there will be an even more common black variant without relief.

The frame of the phone is metal and when closed, the two halves fit together perfectly. The phone is 15.2 mm thick when closed (7.2 mm open) and weighs 190 grams. Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, however, Huawei does not boast of increased durability.

There are two large circles on the back. The upper one is raised and has camera lenses, the lower one is slightly recessed and contains a circular 1 “display. Huawei has a wide range of uses for it – it can display time, date, notifications, it can serve as a camera viewfinder, it supports application widgets (and third parties), it can control the camera, music player, etc. There are many possibilities and in a large number of situations there will be no necessary to reach to open the phone.

But if you can’t resist opening, you’ll see a large 6.9 “OLED display with Full HD + resolution, 21: 9 aspect ratio, 1188 × 2790 pixels resolution and increased refresh rate of 120 Hz (the touch layer samples at 300 Hz). The display can display over 1 billion colors, the wide gamut DCI-P3 is supported. At the top center is a hole for a selfie camera (parameters not known yet).

Did you apply sunscreen correctly?

In the upper circular hole on the back there is a set of three cameras with the following configuration:

• 40 megapixel main camera
• Widescreen camera with a resolution of 13 megapixels and an aperture of f / 2.2
• 32Mpx Ultra Spectrum camera with f / 1.8 aperture for color enhancement

Speculation has not been confirmed that the Huawei P50 Pocket will be the first telephoto clamp, but even with the last member you will have a lot of fun – Huawei promises improved image reproduction and the ability to capture even the finest details, including those not visible to the naked eye. This camera also provides an ultra-spectral fluorescence photography mode, which, for example, allows you to find out if you have applied sunscreen to your entire face.

Unfortunately without 5G

The heart of the Huawei P50 Pocket is last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, which was impoverished by 5G connectivity in the case of this phone. The chip can be paired with up to 12 GB of RAM, the storage offers a high capacity of 512 GB. The battery built into the body has a capacity of 4000 mAh, you can use a fast 40W charger with a USB-C connector to charge it. Unfortunately, wireless charging did not fit in the phone, as well as the headphone jack.

The Huawei P50 Pocket operating system is a Harmony OS with several gadgets for a flexible display; thanks to the possibility of locking the joint at almost any angle, it is possible to divide some applications into halves as with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3.

Price and availability

The Huawei P50 Pocket will be available in China starting today, the prices are as follows:

• The variant with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage comes to 8,988 CNY (about 31,300 crowns without VAT)
• Special gold edition with 12 GB RAM and 512 GB storage will cost 10,988 CNY (about 38,300 crowns without VAT)

The good news is that Huawei representatives have also confirmed global availability for this phone, albeit without any deadlines for the time being.
