SHENZHEN, KOMPAS.com – The United States (US) government was worried some time ago because the Chinese company, Huawei, released its newest flagship cellphone, the Mate 60 series.
The reason is, the Kirin 9000S chipset used in the Mate 60 series is thought to be made using technology from the US.
Huawei and its partner who makes the chipset, namely Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), have been on the US government’s entity list since 2019.
This has led to allegations that Huawei and SMIC have violated US Department of Commerce regulations regarding the use of chip manufacturing tools.

The Huawei Mate 60 series has been officially sold in its home country, China. The regular Huawei Mate 60 and Mate 60 Pro can be purchased there. Meanwhile, the highest model, namely the Mate 60 Pro Plus, will only go on sale next October, although it can already be ordered.
At one of Huawei’s offline outlets in Shenzhen, China, Kompas.com journalist Yudha Pratomo had the opportunity to hold and try the cellphone. The cellphone we tried was the Mate 60 Pro Plus, the highest model in the Mate 60 series.

When we first held the Mate 60 Pro Plus, the first impression we got from this phone was that it was comfortable to hold. All four sides of the Mate 60 Pro Plus have a rounded shape.
This shape and sensation reminds us of holding the iPhone 6. Even though the dimensions are quite large, namely 163.7 x 79 x 8.1 mm with a screen area of 6.8 inches, this cellphone is still comfortable to hold and is not slippery in the hand.

The Huawei Mate 60 Pro Plus is equipped with a 13 MP (ultrawide) front camera, as well as a 3D ToF and laser sensor to support the face scanner security feature.
On the front of the cellphone there are three holes in the screen. Usually, current smartphones, including the flagship class, only have one front camera hole.
This hole houses the 13 MP (ultrawide) front camera component, as well as the 3D ToF sensor and laser for the face scanner security feature.

The back of the Mate 60 Pro Plus is divided into two parts. The upper 2/3 of the part is covered in a synthetic leather-like material, giving a luxurious impression. Meanwhile, the bottom 1/3 is made of polycarbonate.
With this leather-like coating, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro Plus is more comfortable to hold. The surface is also not easily dirty due to fingerprints.

Trying out the Huawei Mate 60 Pro Plus camera
Because the Mate 60 Pro Plus we are holding is a sample device and has not been officially released, access to the device is also limited. We cannot see details of the operating system used.
However, according to Huawei Shenzhen outlet staff in China, this cellphone already uses HarmonyOS 4.0. Huawei Mate 60 Pro Plus is equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery. This cellphone also has a satellite communication feature.
We couldn’t test the capabilities of the Kirin 9000S chipset that the US is concerned about directly. (Baca: This is the performance of the Kirin 9000S, the chip on the Huawei Mate 60 Pro that makes the US nervous)
However, we had the opportunity to try the capabilities of the Huawei Mate 60 Pro Plus camera.
The Mate 60 Pro Plus camera can capture objects at long distances clearly. In fact, this camera can photograph the skin surface in detail, even though it doesn’t have a macro camera.

The Huawei Mate 60 Pro Plus also has a movement sensor on the front. With this sensor, users can scroll through social media without needing to touch the screen.
To do this, users simply face their hand towards the front camera. Then, an icon in the form of a hand will appear. After that, the user simply moves their hand up or down.
