Huawei is once again connected to Uighur monitoring. New documents indicate that China uses Huawei technology in Xinjiang

The Washington Post has come across documents indicating that Huawei has provided the Chinese state with technology to monitor Uighurs, the Muslim ethnic group that mostly lives in the Chinese region of Xinjiang.

The Washington Post reportedly reviewed hundreds of Huawei powerpoint presentations, some of which were labeled “confidential.” It describes how Huawei’s system can be used, among other things, to identify voices, track people with politically dissenting opinions and follow how prisoners move around in prisons.

Huawei denies that their technology was used for the purposes that the PowerPoint presentations seem to indicate. In a statement to the Washington Post, the company said:

“Huawei has no knowledge of the projects mentioned in the Washington Post report. Like all other major service providers, Huawei provides cloud platform services that comply with common industry standards.”

Huawei has previously been accused of using its face recognition system by the Chinese state to identify Uighurs in Xinjiang. something you can read more about here.
