The Mauritian team took third place in the 2022 edition of the Huawei ICT Competition. An awards ceremony was held alongside the presentation of certificates from Huawei’s Seeds for the Future program.
Three young Mauritians distinguished themselves by winning third place in the world stage of the Huawei ICT (Information and Communication Technology – ICT) Competition. Darshini Gajadhar, Aziim Imrit and Muhammad Ikhlas Korimbocus received the awards from the hands of the President of the Republic, Pradeep Roopun, during a ceremony on Thursday 27 October at the Hennessy Park Hotel, in Ebene. Previously they had won the national and regional stages.
The Huawei ICT Competition is organized by the Chinese multinational. It consists of preliminary, national, regional and then international exams. “After the national phase, Huawei’s local office selected us to form a team to represent Mauritius. We were able to represent Mauritius up to third place globally among over 150,000 students from all over the world ”, commented Aziim Imrit in a statement to Le Dimanche / L’Hebdo.
“This is an academic competition divided into four categories: artificial intelligence, 5G, cloud computing and storage. We undergo intensive training, then we have to answer the questionnaires. From the regional stages, we have to form a team and collaborate, ”adds Darshini Gajadhar. To gain efficiency, the three teammates shared categories.
“We have discovered emerging technologies and applied our knowledge to overcome this challenge. This competition has allowed us to hone our technological knowledge, ”says Muhammad Ikhlas Korimbocus.
In addition, the 40 students participating in the 2022 edition of Huawei’s Seeds for the Future program received their certificates at the same ceremony. According to Mohammad Shaffeeq Eydatoulah, Director of Delivery & Service at Huawei Mauritius, they were thus able to familiarize themselves with new technologies. “They also have the opportunity to do an internship at Huawei and, why not, to be employed there. They also had the opportunity to grow in the cultural aspect, because this year we had many students from African countries ”, comments Mohammad Shaffeeq Eydatoulah. The latter confirms that the ICT Competition, as well as the Seeds for the Future program, allow Huawei to identify and recruit new talent.
“I’m sure you’ve learned a lot (during the Seeds for the Future program and the ICT Competition). These are ideal platforms not only for learning, but also for sharing new ideas. I have no doubt that these programs will promote Mauritian talent in the ICT sector and contribute to community development. […] In Mauritius we all speak two or even three different languages. But now it’s also important to know how to talk to machines by learning to program, ”says Pradeep Roopun.
