Huawei has established a 5G network at sea with fishing boats

China Unicom, one of the most widely used telecom companies in China, had recently signed a 5G project with Huawei, one of the biggest tech giants in the country. The two companies’ project won the “5G Productivity Competition” organized by GSMA and placed first.

As part of this project, a 5G network was to be established off the sea coast in the city of Yangjiang in the Chinese province of Guangdong.

The 5G network installed on the 450-kilometre-long coastline of Yangjiang city in Guangdong province will completely change the lives of fishermen in particular: It allows them to monitor weather conditions, sell fish and other products when they go fishing, and to keep in touch with their families.

Guangdong Unicom’s digital system has been installed on more than 4,000 fishing boats and is already helping the local fisheries administration mitigate the impact of typhoons and combat illegal fishing operations.

Using the 5G MetaAAU ultra-large-scale antenna array, the system takes full advantage of the large bandwidth of the 3.5G frequency band, delivering 60Mbps download and 2Mbps upload speed at 61km wide.
