“Huawei fights back and US/EU warn Malaysia against using Huawei products for 5G rollout”

Have you ever thought that the United States is done with Huawei after burdening them with multiple sanctions? Then you may need to think again. From all indications, the purpose of the ban was to put Huawei out of business. However, the Chinese tech giant is far from exiting the tech market. Huawei is fighting against all odds to come back even stronger. Last year it invested billions of dollars in research and development and continues to invest more.

Huawei also announced that it was able to replace more than 13,000 US-related components in its products. Apart from that, the company also previously announced a 30% revenue growth for 2022. All of this clearly indicates that Huawei is on the right path to rebound. Hence the need for the United States to do more. The latest US move is to join the European Union in warning Malaysia against using Huawei technology.

EU and US warn Malaysia against Huawei

According to a Reuters report, the European Union and the United States have warned Malaysia against using Huawei products. Currently, Malaysia is finalizing a test of its 5G rollout. The country is considering the possibility of involving Huawei Technologies Co Ltd to bid for a role in Malaysia’s network infrastructure. In this regard, the EU and the US have warned Malaysia of national security and foreign investment risks if they involve Huawei. The Financial Times reported it on Tuesday.

In April, EU and US officials wrote a letter to the government. The letter concerned Malaysia’s decision to reconsider its decision to award Ericsson an 11 billion ringgit ($2.5 billion) contract. The purpose of this contract was for Ericsson to build the state-owned 5G network.

For some time now, the Malaysian government has considered Huawei as the best option for its 5G rollout. The government has even gone the extra mile to dismiss the security concerns raised by the US government. Highlights of the EU/US letter read to the Malaysian government read:

“Senior officials in Washington agree with me that disrupting the existing model would hurt the competitiveness of new industries. This will block the growth of 5G in Malaysia. It will also damage Malaysia’s business-friendly image internationally. Brian McFeeters, the US Ambassador to Malaysia, wrote in one of the letters. “Allowing untrusted providers in any part of the network also exposes Malaysia’s infrastructure to national security risks,” he wrote. »

No comments yet United States

Reuters reporters approached Huawei, the EU Delegation to Malaysia and the Malaysian Ministry of Communications and Digital. However, none of them came forward to comment on the matter.

Will Malaysia finally heed US warnings now that the EU is involved? Or it will stick to its decision to allow Huawei to participate in its 5G rollout. We are currently monitoring this report closely. We will post an update whenever something new comes out.
