Huawei Canada defends Meng Wanzhou, but refuses to condemn arrest of two Canadians

Huawei Canada’s vice president of government affairs defended Chinese company CFO Meng Wanzhou, detained at home in Vancouver, on Sunday, but refused to condemn the two Canadians’ detention in China as a reprisal.

“The company has never done anything wrong. We have been transparent in all of our interactions. Meng Wanzhou did nothing wrong, ”Morgan Elliott told Global.

He refused, however, to comment on the arrests of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, on grounds of espionage, by the Chinese authorities, which revealed no evidence to this effect, or to compare their detention in prisons with a visit ban with that of Mme Wanzhou, who frequents her family in a condo in Vancouver where she lives while awaiting the conclusion of her challenge to her extradition to the United States, where the American authorities want to indict her.

“These are actions that were done outside of the company,” said Mr. Elliott. We are not a political entity, we are not a political government. We are a technology company that wants to do business in Canada. We want everyone to come home. ”

“It is a political situation that requires political discussions and political solutions,” he told Global.

Mr. Elliott therefore declined to comment on the attitude of the Chinese government in this whole affair and the arrest of the two Canadians, who have been in prison for more than two years in China.

Arrested in Canada in 2018 at the request of the Americans, Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of the world number one in 5G equipment, is accused of bank fraud by the United States. The two Canadians were arrested soon after.
