Huawei announces its post-Covid outlook in Africa

Huawei held a press conference on Friday September 24, 2021 on the group’s post-Covid prospects in Africa. Karl Song, Vice-President Corporate Communications of the Group took the opportunity to report on Huawei’s projects in favor of African economies and the digital transition.

“African economies following the Covid-19 pandemic” is the theme of Huawei Northern Africa Connect 2021 which brought together African media and the large Huawei group. During this virtual meeting, Karl Song expressed the group’s desire to support the African continent in its economic development as well as its digital transformation. “Digital transformation is now more real and urgent than ever,” he explained.

A digital transformation focused on investing in infrastructure

The Group’s Vice-President Corporate Communications spoke about the importance of infrastructure in digital transformation. Infrastructures are the receptacles of digital services linked to smart cities to the cloud, etc. Thus Mr. Song renewed Huawei’s commitment to transfer its technology (5G, Cloud, IA) to Africa in order to boost the digital sector, especially with the increasingly growing demand (increase in global network traffic by 50% and the home broadband connection demand increased by 20%). “In Africa, we hope with partners to bring digital technology to every person, every household,” he said.

Towards a green economy

The Chinese group is also not indifferent to environmental concerns. Thus, Song announced that financial efforts will be made for the energy transition of the group. In this regard, he said that “Huawei’s products will be 2.7 times more energy efficient by 2025 than in 2019”

The training component

Regarding training, Karl Song announced an upcoming investment of 150 million USD in programs for 1.5 million people in more than 150 countries (including a large margin reserved for African countries). These programs will be used to upgrade the skills of direct players in the sector and sharpen their expertise in the field.
