JAKARTA – Huawei and SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp), the largest chip-making company in China, has succeeded in creating a sophisticated processor with 7 nanometer technology to drive smartphone Huawei’s latest, the Mate 60 Pro. These are the findings reported by the analysis firm TechInsights in the demolition report shared with Reuters.
A TechInsights report reveals that the latest Kirin 9000s chip used in the Huawei Mate 60 Pro is manufactured in China by SMIC. Huawei has started selling smartphone Last week’s Mate 60 Pro. The supplied specs advertise its ability to make satellite calls, but provide no information about the power of the chipset inside.
“This processor is the first to use SMIC’s latest technology with a size of 7 nanometers, and it shows that the Chinese government is making progress in efforts to build a domestic chip ecosystem,” the research firm said, quoted Reuters.
Huawei and SMIC have yet to comment on these findings.
Buyers of this phone in China have been posting tear-down videos and sharing speed tests on social media which show that the Mate 60 Pro is capable of achieving download speeds that exceed that of top 5G phones.
The launch of the phone has Chinese social media and state media users excited, with some noting that it coincides with a visit by US Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo.
Since 2019, the US has restricted Huawei’s access to the chip-making tools essential to producing its most advanced mobile models. However, this company can only launch a few batch limited to 5G models with existing chips.
However, research firms tell Reuters in July that they believed Huawei was planning to return to the industry smartphone 5G later this year, using their advances in semiconductor device design and chip production from SMIC.
Dan Hutcheson, an analyst from TechInsights, said that this development was a “challenge” for the US. “Raimondo came in to calm things down, and this chip is saying, ‘Look what we can do, we don’t need you,'” he said.
