Huawei and Ericsson have signed a long-term global patent cross-licensing agreement covering patents essential to various standards such as 3GPP, ITU, IEEE and IETF standards for 3G, 4G and 5G mobile communication technologies. The agreement covers the sale of both companies’ network infrastructure and consumer devices, giving each side global access to the other’s proprietary, standardized technologies.
“We are pleased to conclude a long-term global cross-licensing agreement with Ericsson” said Alan Fan (Alan Fan), Huawei Head of the Intellectual Property Department. “Companies that are the main mobile communication standard essential patent (SEP) developers, recognize the value of each other’s intellectual property, and this agreement creates a stronger patent environment. This demonstrates the commitment of both parties that intellectual property should be properly respected and protected.”
In the last 20 years Huawei has been one of the main developers of ICT standards, including cellular, Wi-Fi and multimedia codecs. In 2022, Huawei ranked first in the ranking of the number of patent applications submitted to the European Patent Office with 4,505 applications.
“Our commitment to sharing leading technological innovations will contribute to the healthy and sustainable development of the industry and provide consumers with more stable products and services,” Fan added.
Huawei is both SEP holder as well as implementer and strives to take a balanced approach to licensing. By signing this agreement, it both grants and receives access to key technologies. Fan said, “This agreement is the result of intensive discussions that ensured that the interests of patent owners and enforcers were fairly respected.”
