Hualien earthquake kills 10, missing man in Taroko Park found and confirmed dead
A 7.2-magnitude earthquake off Hualien, Taiwan, killed 10 people, injured more than 1,000 people, trapped more than 600 people, and lost contact with more than 40 people.
The latest death was a man who was buried alive by a boulder on Xiaozuilu Trail in Taroko Park. He was rescued and confirmed dead.
The 59 workers trapped in the Heping mining area went down the mountain on their own in the afternoon. Their identities were confirmed by the police and they were not injured.
As for the Uranus Building, which was tilted severely after the earthquake, a teacher returned to the building in search of a pet cat and died. Prosecutors from the Hualien District Prosecutor’s Office and structural engineers arrived at the scene to collect evidence and investigate whether human negligence was involved in the collapse.
After the earthquake, many parts of the Suhua Road Corridor collapsed and were interrupted, and some sections of the road were open to traffic. After overnight repairs, the Taiwan Railway’s northbound and eastern main lines resumed service in the morning, and added additional flights between Yilan and Hualien.
After the earthquake, Hualien hotels and B&Bs experienced a wave of cancellations. The authorities provided them with capital financing to help them rebuild and resume normal operations.
