After the DHB Cup quarter-finals, HSVH will now start playing in the LIQUI MOLY HBL two weeks after the European Championship. Tomorrow, Sunday, February 11th, the Handball Sport Club Hamburg will meet the Füchse Berlin. The game kicks off at 6:00 p.m. in the Hamburg sports hall.
In the first leg at the end of November, HSVH led in Berlin until shortly after the break before the Füchse were able to turn the game in their favor with a 5-0 run. Until five minutes before the final whistle, HSVH remained within 4 goals of the Berliners, who ultimately won the game clearly with 37:31.
Foxes are fully in the title race
The Berliners, like HSVH, played their first competitive game in 2024 last weekend in the quarter-finals of the DHB Cup. The capital city team beat VfL Gummersbach 31:29, moved into the REWE Final4 and still has every chance of winning the cup. The Foxes are also ambitious in the EHF European League, made it into the main round without defeat and have won their two games so far here too.
At LIQUI MOLY HBL, the Berliners’ starting position is similarly promising. The Füchse won their home game against SG Flensburg-Handewitt last Thursday with 32:31 and kept their pursuers from the far north at bay. Coach Jaron Siewert’s team is still in second place and is tied with league leaders SC Magdeburg with 34:4 points. HSVH is in 14th place with 14:24 points.
Berlin relies on world stars and talents
The foxes are therefore completely involved in the title race. This is largely due to the powerful offensive, which has already scored 635 goals this season, making it the best value in the league. Differential player Mathias Gidsel leads the way for the Berliners with 147 goals and 78 assists, making him the most goal contributors in the “strongest league in the world”.
After him, his Danish compatriots Lasse Andersson (132 goals + 53 assists) and Hans Lindberg (100 goals) are particularly impressive. Goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev has also saved the most balls in the league so far this season (229) and is an extremely reliable support in the Füchse goal.
In addition to the experienced top players, Füchse coach Jaron Siewert is increasingly relying on very well-trained talent. Playmaker Nils Lichtlein in particular is getting a lot of playing time this season and is repaying the trust with currently 41 goals and 38 assists. In addition to him, Tim Freihöfer, Matthes Langhoff, Max Beneke and other top talents receive regular playing time. The future Hamburger Moritz Sauter is also part of the Füchse Berlin squad, but in league play he usually plays for Potsdam in the 2nd HBL and is mainly used in the European League for the Füchse.
Hamburger against foxes without a win so far
Since promotion to the Handball Bundesliga, the Handball Sport Club Hamburg has not managed a win in 5 league games against the Füchse (plus another defeat in the cup). However, the Hamburg team was often able to keep the games open for a long time, but so far there has been no success. Both the form curves of both teams and the tense personnel situation at HSVH put the Füchse clearly in the favorite position this time too.
Coach Torsten Jansen’s team is reflecting on its fighting spirit before the game and wants to make it as difficult as possible for the top team from the capital to take two points from Hamburg. As in every game, on a good day, HSVH will fancy their chances even as underdogs and will throw everything into it to make them forget the great disappointment of their own performance in the second half against Flensburg.
HSVH coach Jansen is aware of his team’s difficult situation (long-term absence of Lassen, Magaard, Axmann) and said after the cup game against Flensburg: “We are now fully concentrating on the Bundesliga. With all the failures, it will also be a difficult task, but we will be ready and keep our heads up.”

The performance from the first leg is always encouraging. There, with a similarly clear starting point, the Hamburg team delivered a brave and courageous performance that will now be repeated again.
