Hamburg (dpa / lno) – Hamburger SV mourns Ernst-Otto Rieckhoff. As the second division soccer team announced on Sunday, the former chairman of the supervisory board died on Saturday at the age of 69 after a serious illness. The long-standing member of the association chaired the supervisory body in 2011 and 2012. “The HSV family mourns a well-deserved and committed HSVer. Our sympathy goes to the family and all friends of Ernst-Otto Rieckhoff,” the message said.
Rieckhoff joined HSV in 1966 at the age of 15 as an active athlete in the handball department and played there with the former HSV President Horst Becker, among others. Later he was also active in HSV tennis and remained loyal to the club as a supporting member in the area of amateur sports even after his active time.
He has also volunteered in the club for decades. Rieckhoff was treasurer from June 1988 to November 1990, from 2005 he was a member of the supervisory board for almost eight years, from January 2011 to May 2012 as its chairman. After that, Rieckhoff was the driving force behind the “HSVPlus” structural reform, with which the professional department was spun off into HSV Fußball AG in 2014. In 2013 Ernst-Otto Rieckhoff received the Association’s Golden Badge of Honor for “his great honorary services”.
