Once it was about qualifying for the final of the UEFA Cup, jumping into the DFB Cup final or at least a place in the Champions League. A top game is the 156th northern derby between Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen on Sunday (1.30 p.m. / Sky) more than a decade later – but only in the 2nd Bundesliga.
But that doesn’t detract from the very special rivalry at all. “It’s the most important game this season for our region,” says Bremen’s head of professional football, Clemens Fritz.
And the ex-international knows what he’s talking about. The now 41-year-old was on the pitch in the legendary five games between April 22 and May 10, 2009, when HSV ultimately lost out on three different levels.
Werder coach Ole Werner can still remember these memorable encounters very well, especially the emotions. “In that sense, it’s my first real northern derby and a task that I’m really looking forward to,” said the coach on Friday.
