HSV draws against Fortuna Düsseldorf after doping verdict against Mario Vuskovic: Match Report.

Status: 04/01/2023 10:25 p.m

Second division football team HSV drew in game one after the doping verdict against Mario Vuskovic. Although the Hamburg team did not win for the third time in a row, they kept their pursuers Fortuna Düsseldorf at a distance – seven points.

Due to the 2:2 (1:2) on Friday evening, the Hanseatic League missed a return to a direct promotion place in the table. Leaders Darmstadt 98 (1-0 in Nuremberg) are now five points ahead, second-placed Heidenheim is now one point ahead of HSV after the 2-2 draw in Kaiserslautern on Saturday evening.

Glatzel: “We are disappointed”

The reactions of the HSV players after the game were correspondingly frustrating: “We are disappointed because we really wanted to win,” explained striker Robert Glatzel. Defender Moritz Heyer admitted that “we were a few percentage points short of victory,” but he also emphasized: “We showed morale and got the point.”

Laszlo Benes gave Hamburg an early lead, while Düsseldorf turned the game around through goals from Dawid Kownacki and Felix Klaus. In the second half, HSV scored a well-deserved equalizer through an own goal by Christoph Klarer.

In the last few minutes, coach Tim Walter’s team was outnumbered: Javi Montero had to leave the field with yellow-red and will force the HSV coach to play again in the upcoming game against Hannover 96 on Saturday in a week (1 p.m., in the NDR Livecenter). reorganization of his defensive line. Especially since Miro Muheim will also be missing after his fifth yellow card.

HSV goal celebration with Vuskovic jersey

In Düsseldorf, due to the absence of captain Sebastian Schonlau (suspended), Walter relied on the Montero/Moritz Heyer duo in central defence. The defense was initially not asked at all, in the special jersey for the 30th anniversary of the Supporters Club, the Hamburg team immediately put the forward gear – and successfully.

Noah Katterbach sent Robert Glatzel on his way, the HSV attacker was brought down by Düsseldorf’s Jordy de Wijs in the penalty area – Benes converted the undisputed penalty in the margin to lead the visitors (5th). Worth discussing: De Wijs was only given a yellow card for the foul, and being sent off because of an emergency brake would have been justifiable.

An acquittal would have had unforeseeable consequences for the global anti-doping fight, says Hendrik Maassen in his commentary. more

After the goal celebration, Benes was handed a jersey with the number 44 by his coach on the sidelines and held it up – a commitment from the club to one because of EPO doping HSV central defender Mario Vuskovic, who has been suspended for two years.

Montero is wrong, Muheim too slow

But the joy of the almost 17,000 Hamburg fans who had traveled with them in the sold-out stadium (52,200 spectators) didn’t last long: After a corner kick, Montero jumped under the cross and Kownacki scored with a header to make it 1-1 (21st). And seven minutes later, Fortuna had even turned the game with a beautiful attack.

Klarer’s half-high pass from the penalty area to the center circle was extended by Rouwen Hennings with a header onto Klaus, who was starting up. The former 96 professional escaped Muheim and also defeated guest keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes to make it 2-1 for the hosts (28th).

From then on, the Rhinelanders had the game under control and were more snappy, especially in the duels. Nevertheless, it was HSV who had two more chances towards the end of the first half, but Glatzel missed them (38′, 45′ + 1).

HSV with a lot of ball possession but few chances to score

After the restart, Düsseldorf acted cautiously, let HSV come and repeatedly put pinpricks through fast switching games. Klaus missed a promising counterattack when he shot himself instead of serving Kownacki who had run with him (51st).

The Walter-Elf played at high speed and with many ball relays – but too transparent in the last third, so that clear chances of equalization were scarce for a long time. It wasn’t until the 71st minute that things became dangerous again: Sonny Kittel’s free kick sent Düsseldorf goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier over the crossbar.

Compensation by an own goal

And yet the Hanseatic League equalized: Ludovit Reis lobbed into Kittel’s path in the penalty area, which is well worth seeing, Düsseldorf’s Klarer tipped the ball into his own goal when trying to clear (75′). Shortly thereafter, Kittel almost made it 3-2 for HSV, but just flew wide of the goal on the left (77′).

Montero: Second dismissal in the third game

In the final phase, both teams were looking for a decision, Hamburg had to make do with a man down after a completely unnecessary tackle by Montero, who had been booked with a yellow card (88′). It was the Spaniard’s second dismissal in his third game for HSV.

But there was no more than a great chance from Daniel Ginczek, who ran alone towards Heuer Fernandes, for Düsseldorf, the HSV keeper cleared with a foot (90 + 3). So it remained with the ultimately fair division of points, which helps the Hamburgers more than Fortuna.

Derogatory gesture from coach Walter?

After the game there were discussions about an implied derogatory gesture by Walter. After the 2:2 he hit the crook of his right arm with his left hand, stopped the movement and then stroked his hair with his right hand. What he could say about it, he was asked in the Sportschau interview: “Nothing at all. They know that you should treat other people well,” said the coach.
