Eberbach. (pm) It was the only school in Baden-Württemberg Hohenstaufen High School (HSG) Eberbach nominated for the prestigious school award “Digital Education 2020”. The Eberbacher Schule prevailed over 100 applicants on the basis of its convincing digital concept and was selected. With this, the jury honored the enormous further development of the HSG in the field of digital education.

For this purpose, the philosophy in the school’s IT area has been fundamentally changed in recent years and the technical components have been adapted accordingly. This process was repeatedly accompanied by external consultants, who supported the teachers with their expertise both in the digital infrastructure and in the didactic implementation of new teaching concepts. The Hohenstaufen Gymnasium now has excellent digital equipment, which is why the educational institution in the Neckarstadt was selected as a model school in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region in 2019.

However, those responsible in the school community do not see digitization as upgrading the IT system, but rather as a holistic view. The focus of the efforts is always on the students and the question of how modern digital devices can support and meaningfully supplement their learning processes. The aim of the Hohenstaufen Gymnasium is to train mature citizens in an increasingly digitalized society.

For example, all young people in the eighth to tenth grade have received their own school iPad, which they use for daily learning as a matter of course. In addition, all children have access to a stable, functioning digital education platform. In the current homeschooling phase, the entire timetable is digitally implemented and instructed. This means that students do not have to worry about gaps in the curriculum due to a lack of digital support; even the lack of social interaction at school can be partially compensated for via the platform.

Not only in the context of distance learning, especially in the face-to-face phases, digital lessons at the Eberbacher Gymnasium are repeatedly implemented in a very innovative and always targeted manner in many places in all departments due to its flexibility and mobility.

In addition to training in the use of digital end devices or cloud solutions, the HSG also places great emphasis on prevention in this area and the responsible use of networked computers, tablets or smartphones. This is done with the help of media workshops of external educational partners or training of teachers in programs on Internet addiction in cooperation with the Heidelberg University of Education.

In addition, the openness to new, contemporary teaching concepts has resulted in a first classroom being redesigned with external funding explicitly for new teaching formats, in which the classic learning structures are broken up and the focus is more on the independence of the students and the search for creative solution strategies becomes.

Thanks to the holistic view of the digital education of young people, the school was finally nominated as one of ten schools for the 2020 school prize “Digital Education”. The prize is endowed with a total of 10,000 euros and is awarded in the categories “Newcomer Digital”, “Best Digital Teaching” and “Best Homeschooling Concept”.

The official virtual award ceremony and announcement of the winners will take place on February 17, 2021. Those responsible in the digital area of the Hohenstaufen-Gymnasium as well as the entire school community can already look forward to the great honor that they received through the nomination alone.
