Krefeld The third division handball team made too many mistakes in the first promotion round game at VfL Pfullingen on Saturday and had to admit defeat with 31:34. Circle runner Alexander Kübler scored four goals in a row after the break.

Even if the attitude and morale of the Eagles were right, HSG Krefeld Niederrhein suffered a 31:34 (14:17) defeat in the promotion round to the 2nd Handball Bundesliga at VfL Pfullingen. A heated duel developed from the start. The players on both sides were highly motivated. The two referees had their hands full. The Eagles took the lead for the first time in the seventh minute through Pascal Noll’s goal, but that was the last time, which was certainly surprising. But before the break, HSG missed too many clear chances to score. On the other hand, VfL showed why they are so strong at home and why they beat Konstanz in the preliminary round. The team quickly fell behind by four goals, but always fought back.

Coach Maik Pallach sent another circle runner onto the floor in Alexander Kübler, who made a brilliant debut with three goals in a row to make it 20:22. Then Maik Schneider conceded a two-minute penalty for an alleged storm foul, which prevented the possible goal from coming up. The HSG never recovered from this. Pfullingen extended the lead to four goals. In the 55th minute the game was decided at 32:26. The guests only managed to correct the result.

“I knew that Pfullingen was the favorite in the group in terms of emotionality and team spirit at home. But we were ready, we were able to hold back emotionally and we kept fighting back. In terms of intensity, it couldn’t be compared to the preliminary round games. Even though we conceded 34 goals and felt like we lost the goalkeeper duel, the defense was better than in the preliminary round. We won a lot of duels. The decisive factors were small things and mistakes that added up in the end,” said coach Maik Pallach after the game, who had to do without Mike Schulz as well as Valdas Novickis.

With a view to the first home game, the coach said: “We have to grow in a game like this. We want to show against Hanau that we want to play up there for a long time.” He also relies on the support of the spectators: “If you have a full house in this round, that’s a clear advantage. The 1000 fans in Pfullingen really sounded the alarm. I hope that we can have a pound like that in our home games and use it. Maybe 2000 spectators will come to the Glockenspitzhalle.”
