In Season D of the 3rd Handball Bundesliga, TV Leichlingen withdrew its team from the game on Tuesday. After circle player Alexander Kübler, HSG Krefeld Niederrhein signed Valdas Novickis, the second top performer from Leichlinger. The 35-year-old Lithuanian, son of the Russian handball world champion Valdemaras Novickis, is currently the top scorer in Season D with 104 goals, including 42 from seven meters. Novickis has top-flight experience and has played for the Lithuanian national team. The change had already been indicated in the previous week. Novickis is to relieve playmaker and captain Merten Krings in the backcourt of the Eagles.

He switched to Leichlinger TV for the first time in 2009 via his home club Kaunas and stations in Magdeburg and Düsseldorf. He played there continuously from 2014. In addition to newcomer Alex Kübler (also Leichlinger TV), Novickis is also no stranger to Maik Schneider, Mike Schulz, Kevin Christopher Brüren and Lars Jagieniak.

Contrary to the wishes and announcements, the Leichlinger can no longer compete in the second half of the season. After the departures of Alexander Kübler (HSG Krefeld), Lennart Mentges (Ratingen), Kaan Taymaz (HG Remscheid) and now top scorer Valdas Novickis as well as other impending departures, the remaining part of coach Lars Hepp’s team decided at short notice not to do so to compete more in league operations. For those responsible for LTV, this development is sad, but unfortunately understandable.

A few weeks ago, the LTV announced that the third division game operation could no longer be continued after the end of the current season for various reasons. Due to the effects of the corona pandemic and the flood disaster, the people ofblossom towns had to constantly struggle with major problems. Above all, the fact that, among other things, no home game and training facilities could be found made the work so difficult – athletically, but also financially – that the towel had to be thrown in the towel some time ago. The “Am Hammer” sports hall has not been available since summer and will not be usable again until 2023 at the earliest. “We very much regret that the Leichlingers have to withdraw. I hope they can start rebuilding soon and return to the 3rd division,” said HSG Managing Director André Schicks.

“In Valdas Novickis we are gaining an intelligent, experienced and dangerous player for our team. Not only with regard to the Corona situation, it is important to have a correspondingly broad staffing level. Valdas is also an important reinforcement with a view to our long-term sporting goals. Our young players can learn a lot from him and will benefit from his enormous experience,” says sporting director Stefan Nippes.
