The Eagles missed their first goal from the start, but after the 0:1 they were wide awake, focused and concentrated, as coach Maik Pallach demanded. After ten minutes they led by three goals, which also lasted at the break. There was little sign of a cauldron in the narrow hall. The HSG fans who traveled with them made themselves louder with their drumming than the supporters of TuS.

It only got hectic on the floor. This was primarily due to the two referees. For the Laura Bley / Birgit Tarka duo, who referee games up to the women’s Bundesliga and men’s up to the 3rd division, the pace was obviously too high and they sometimes imposed exaggerated time penalties. Three TuS players each had to leave the floor for two minutes. The guests even conceded two minutes six times. “The referees pulled their line through. I don’t think it was an unfair game, but you could be prepared for the fact that there would be a lot of time penalties,” said HSG captain Merten Krings afterwards, who once again gave a strong performance as a director. Despite penalties, the HSG always dominated events because coach Pallach made tactical use of the balanced depth of his squad. “We always wanted to set new impulses,” explained the coach afterwards. Because Merten was man-marked here and there early on, he sent Valdas Novickis onto the field, who then used the available space.

The fact that the three-goal lead held up to the break with a man down was also thanks to goalkeeper Sven Bartmann with his eight saves. The defense was also very solid. “We knew that TuS would have difficulties if we were six at the back,” said Merten.

Even after the break, the HSG didn’t let anything burn. The TuS showed morale and fighting spirit, but never got dangerously close. In the 42nd minute, HSG led by five goals for the first time. This was mainly due to “KC” Brüren, who scored five of his eight goals after the change.

“If you’re down for 12 minutes in a half and still go into the break with a three-plus, you’re definitely the better team. At the back it was even more sovereign with an outstanding goalkeeping performance. So we deserved to win. I never doubted my team for a minute. We’re all looking forward to two or three hours, some maybe five or six. Then we have two weeks to prepare for Schalksmühle,” said Pallach.

Sports director Stefan Nippes was also visibly satisfied after this important success: “It was an important victory, also for self-confidence. I’m very proud of the boys. They deserve it, hard work pays off. Now we are looking forward to Schalksmühle. I hope the hall will then be as full as the Corona rules allow.”
