After the opening game on Saturday between the two second division teams TUSEM Essen and TuS N-Lübbecke, the Eagles will play against a first division team for the third time in a row after testing against Bergischer HC and ASV Hamm-Westfalen. This time it is called VfL Gummersbach. Anything but a victory for the Bergische would be a surprise. But the Eagles are looking for a challenge against strong opponents.
“We analyzed the past games and worked out all the good points as well as those that could be improved. These were discussed in our training sessions. It’s good for us that we can test against such good teams in preparation. After the game against Hamm-Westphalia and the two games from the home tournament at the weekend, we will go back into the analysis and draw our conclusions for the coming season,” says coach Mark Schmitz. He still has to do without the four long-term injured Sven Bartmann, Steffen Hahn, Mike Schulz and Lars Jagieniak. On the other hand, Matija Mircic, who was rested against Hamm, is expected to play again. Below is a brief introduction to the three guest teams.

TuS N-Lübbecke: At the beginning of the 2021/2022 season, the team was able to inspire enthusiasm as a promoted player in the Handball Bundesliga. Especially after the 29:25 win over record champions THW Kiel everyone was talking about it. But when they lost a whopping 17 games in a row between mid-December and the end of May, direct relegation was unavoidable. The club reacted after the season and parted ways with coach Emir Kurtagic. For this season, the club from East Westphalia has signed ex-national player Michael Haass, who won the world championship with Germany in 2007, as the new coach. Five players left TuS in the summer, in Sven Weßling (SG BBM Bietigheim), Rutger ten Velde (TuS Ferndorf), Jo Gerrit Genz (ASV Hamm-Westfalen) and Nikolas Katsigiannis (Rhein-Neckar Löwen) the Bundesliga relegated four players oblige. In a first endurance test, the newly formed squad lost 24:33 to TBV Lemgo Lippe.

In addition, the blue and whites secured a total of 13 international titles. The coach has been Icelander Gudjón Valur Sigurdsson since summer 2020, who has already played for Rhein-Neckar Löwen, THW Kiel, FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. The captain of the newly promoted Bundesliga team is national player Julian Köster. The 22-year-old has played 15 international matches and scored 27 goals for the team coached by Alfred Gislason. At the EM 2022, the 2.03 meter tall backcourt player made positive headlines with his performances. The promotion squad was reinforced with five newcomers, including 27-year-old Dominik Mappes from TV Hüttenberg.

TuSEM food: Coach Jamal Naji, who had coached Essen since the summer of 2020, joined the Bundesliga club Bergisches HC in the summer. The new coach is Michael Hegemann, who has been a player and assistant coach for the Essern since 2014. Now the 2007 World Champion is assuming responsibility as head coach for the first time. “I am really looking forward to my new tasks. It is an enormous leap of faith from Niels Ellwanger and Herbert Stauber that you have entrusted the first team to me as head coach. Together with my coaching and support team, I will do everything to continue the good work of Jaron Siewert and Jamal Naji in the best possible way,” says Hegemann. Six players left the three-time German champions in the summer. Newcomers were Tim Mast, Finley Werschkull, Finn Wolfram, Alexander Schoss (all TSV Bayer Dormagen) and Felix Eißing (Magdeburg).
