HSG Blomberg-Lippe Admits Defeat to Borussia Dortmund after Five Wins in a Row

In the sixth game it’s over: HSG Blomberg-Lippe has to admit defeat after five wins in a row. Steffen Birkner’s team lost 31:28 (17:10) away at Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening. After a weak first half, the Lippe Bundesliga team fought their way into the game and showed a great fight that was ultimately not rewarded. The best HSG thrower in the away defeat at BVB was Mia Ziercke with eight goals.

In the NRW derby in front of 609 spectators in the Wellinghofen sports hall, the BVB women’s handball team lived up to their role as favourites. The home side’s game was characterized from the start by good defence, a lot of speed and, in particular, a good dose of self-confidence. Instead, the guests from Lipperland had a hard time and experienced a first half to forget. Steffen Birkner’s team was already four goals behind after ten minutes of play (2:6 from the point of view of the HSG). The two time-outs and the personnel changes at HSG shouldn’t change anything about the course of the game so far. The Lippe Bundesliga team seemed unimaginative, showed little penetrating power and made poor throwing decisions. With a seven-goal deficit (10:17 from the point of view of the HSG) it finally went into the dressing room.

“We didn’t play well in the first half and were too impressed by Dortmund’s performance and backdrop. We made too many avoidable mistakes and didn’t stick to our agreements,” said the HSG head coach with his team’s performance in the first half.

Increasing performance at the HSG is not enough

After the change of sides, however, Steffen Birkner’s team did not hang their heads. The HSG stayed tuned, didn’t give up and worked their way into the game impressively. In the middle of the second half, the Bundesliga side from Lippe reduced their lead to a four-goal deficit (45th minute, 20:24 from HSG’s point of view) and BVB’s machine stuttered a bit. The strenuous Final 4 of the EHF European League last weekend seemed to have an effect on the Dortmund team. In the crunch time, things went in quick succession. In the 55th minute, HSG Blomberg-Lippe scored two goals (26:28 from the point of view of HSG) and made it really exciting again. But it was Yara Ten Holte (27.27% saved balls) between the posts and playmaker Alina Grijseels (six goals) who went ahead at BVB and sealed HSG’s away defeat. In the end, the scoreboard showed a 31:28 and a deserved victory for the women’s handball team from Borussia Dortmund.

“We did a lot better in the second half and even won it, but at the end of the day the mortgage from the first half was far too high to take anything countable with us. We had one or two chances to pose even more problems for Dortmund, but then the effort to catch up became noticeable. We’re looking ahead now and focusing on the game against Bensheim. That will also be a difficult game for us against a team that is well put together, works well together and has a high level of performance. We have to call on our performance, defend in a structured manner and attack in a focused and effective manner,” concluded Birkner.
