The Helsinki Court of Appeal sentenced the 23-year-old man who broke into Oodi, Helsinki’s central library, to a suspended prison term and to pay almost ten tons of compensation for the damages he caused, reports Helsingin Sanomat.

According to HS, the crime took place in February 2023. After entering without permission, the man destroyed the library’s furniture, including tables, lamps, chairs, a lending machine and a tablet. In addition, the man urinated in the library’s cafeteria and stole the straw juice from there. While looking for a place to sleep, he damaged more of the library’s furniture, HS says.

During the interrogations, the man admitted that he was guilty of causing damage and pinching. He regretted his act and could not explain the events, but he said that he was heavily intoxicated.

The district court sentenced the student to a fine of 100 per day, which made the man’s income 600 euros.

The district court’s decision was appealed and it proceeded to the Court of Appeal. It increased the man’s sentence by giving him 60 days of probation. In the opinion of the Court of Appeal, it is well established that imprisonment has been sentenced for almost 10,000 euros of damage.
