An independent Czech developer under the pseudonym Spytihněv released his Quake-inspired single-player retro shooter HROT in early access in January 2021. Today, May 16, 2023, the game has reached its full release.
HROT takes place in a small socialist country near the Soviet Union (we are talking about Czechoslovakia) after an unspecified disaster in 1986: “Those were dark and terrible times. And the game is the same.
The game starts in a civil defense hideout under the Prague metro station. The user is required to put on a non-working gas mask, load the vz.52 pistol and protect the world of their socialist Motherland from strange invaders.
HROT offers classic gameplay and the atmosphere of “Romer” shooters of the 90s, “appropriate brown retro aesthetic” and a wide range of weapons, including experimental Soviet designs and the hammer and sickle.
Among other features of HROT, the developer names hand-made locations inspired by real places, flushable toilets, destructible light bulbs and horses in gas masks.
The release version of HROT contains three story episodes, 26 levels, four endless arenas, more than 50 types of enemies, trains and Prague rats. The Russian language was not included in the deal – the game only supports English and Czech.
HROT is sold in Russian Steam at a price of 369 rubles (including a 15% discount until May 23). During Early Access, the game received over 2.1 thousand reviews, 98% of which were positive.
