Hristo Ivanov: Bulgaria faces a very important question – 2024-02-11 11:13:36

Before this administration and before Bulgaria is a very important question, and that is whether we will be able to show ourselves and our partners outside that we can establish legality and sound institutions on our territory, which means fighting corruption and being able to resolve such cases in a persuasive manner that heals institutions rather than breeds more discontent, instability and mistrust.

This was stated before the BNR by the co-chairman of PP-DB Hristo Ivanov.

Either this administration will show that it can find a way, or it will lose its meaning, he opined. His comment was on the occasion of the murder of Martin Bojanov – the Notary and the created temporary commission to investigate facts about the presence of unregulated influence in the justice system.

“The murder of Martin Bojanov and what is currently being hinted at around his figure, around his activity, there is every reason to expect that it can become and should become a moment of truth in general for the entire model of influence, of exploitation against the law of the judiciary. It is very important for the National Assembly to show will and shed light on all aspects of this case,” Hristo Ivanov stated categorically in an interview for the program “Nedelya 150”.

According to him, the question is not simply who killed the Notary, but the whole pattern of his functioning and how this was possible should be examined:

“Here, a much larger autopsy must be done, not just on the corpse, on the individual criminal structure, but on everything, as an institutional context, that made this possible”.

According to him, this “autopsy” should be done by the parliament. This is a fundamental issue that has its political dimensions, the deputy emphasized. He reminded that the experience of the work of such commissions has shown that they encounter certain limitations. That is why he believes that the legislative framework that can overcome these limitations should be considered:

“Very carefully, but we need to open the topic of this – can we create specific criteria according to which materials that are subject and can be covered in the form of investigative secrecy, nevertheless in the presence of an overriding public interest, can become public. A change in the legislation in this regard should be discussed so that the parliament can more fully do its work”.

According to Hristo Ivanov, the composition of the Commission for the Prevention of Corruption must be quickly replenished. And the verification of the suspicions that there was abuse of special intelligence means requires that the Bureau for Control over the SRS be filled very quickly and convincingly.

According to the PP-DB co-chairman, the case will be a big test.

And about the case with the Foreign Ministry and whoever is the Minister of Foreign Affairs after the rotation, Hristov Ivanov expressed the opinion that “this is not a hoax”:

“The topic is not a domestic issue, it is not a matter of someone’s personal whim, but a legitimate structural interest in finding the right balance in the next edition of the rotational government – to construct foreign policy communication in such a way that it does not lead to additional tensions in the structure. At the same time, of course, Mrs. Gabriel’s interest in continuing her successful work as foreign minister is absolutely objective and legitimate.”

The co-chairman of the PP-DB recommended that the matter be left to Academician Nikolay Denkov and Maria Gabriel.

According to him, it is very important to talk about what the stated priorities and commitments for reforms will be:

“In order for my party “Yes, Bulgaria” to assess the degree of support, commitment to the next edition of the rotation formula, we need to get a clear answer to the question – to what extent we can expect in the next 9 months the next stage of judicial reform, the new Law on the Judiciary to be implemented and with what major political priorities set in this regard”.

Hristo Ivanov emphasized that the issue of how the regulators will be filled, so that there is no parcelling, is also extremely important.

Asked if we were going for a 2-in-1 election, he said it depended on whether we could “saturate the next edition of the hard compromises we otherwise make with thought”.

“If we are responsible and politically mature, there is no reason to go to elections. But if we show that we cannot make sense of the right ambitions and priorities for the existence of this government in the future, the fair thing is to turn to the voters and let them say what let’s do from now on,” the PP-DB co-chairman believes.
