Thailand Launches Expanded HPV Vaccination campaign
Thailand is making notable strides in the fight against cervical cancer with a nationwide expansion of its human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program. On December 20, 2024, a major initiative kicked off, introducing a new, more effective vaccine and substantially increasing access for young women.
The launch event, held at Wat Khian Khet School in pathum Thani Province, was attended by key figures including Mr. Somsak Thepsuthin,Minister of Public Health; Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health; and other government officials and over 1,000 students and executives. This widespread rollout underscores the Thai government’s commitment to preventative healthcare.
The new program introduces a nine-strain HPV vaccine, offering broader protection against cancer-causing strains than previous versions. A key advantage is that it requires only one dose, simplifying administration and reducing costs.Minister Thepsuthin emphasized the importance of this advancement, stating, “Kick off activities for vaccination with 9 types of HPV, 1 dose, will begin concurrently throughout the country from today. and will expand the Kick off activities to another 5 provinces, covering every region. To create a continuous campaign and give it as a New Year’s gift to the target group the service will be provided to over 400,000 girls in Grade 5, academic year 2024, under the benefits of over 400,000 people nationwide as the first group, and there is a plan to complete the injection before the school break in February. After that, vaccination will be expanded to females aged 11 – 20 years who have not yet received the vaccine.during March 2025 onwards.”
This initiative targets over 400,000 fifth-grade girls initially, with plans to expand to women aged 11-20 who haven’t been vaccinated. The program also includes cervical cancer screenings for women aged 30-60. Dr. Opas highlighted the broader public health implications, noting that cancer is a leading cause of death globally, impacting quality of life and healthcare systems. he added, “Because the more injections there are, the lower a woman’s chance of developing cervical cancer in the future. We therefore invite women between the ages of 11 and 20 who have not yet had the HPV vaccination, whether they are students or working people, to come get vaccinated for free at service centers near their homes across the country. In addition, there will be a campaign for women. Age 30 - 60 years, undergo cervical cancer screening at the same time. For the goal of Thai women having a good quality of life. Be safe from cervical cancer according to the slogan “Thai women stay away from cancer with the HPV vaccine” or “Save Girls, No Cancer by HPV Vaccine.”
Thailand’s proactive approach to cervical cancer prevention serves as a model for other nations. The expanded HPV vaccination program, with its focus on accessibility and a more effective vaccine, represents a significant step towards a healthier future for Thai women and offers valuable lessons for global health strategies.
