Interest in anti-HPV vaccination has increased in Constanța County. If more than 4,000 doses were administered in the whole of last year, in the first two months of this year, almost 1,000 vaccines against HPV infection, which is associated with the occurrence of cervical cancer and five other types of cancer, have already been used.
Annually, in Romania, thousands of cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed, our country being in the first place in the European Union in the incidence of the disease and with the highest mortality rate from this disease.
Chronic infection with certain types of human papillomavirus HPV is responsible for 99% of cervical cancer cases, which, detected in the early stages, can even be cured.
In addition, the population can protect itself by vaccination, says the doctor Patriciu Achimaş-Cadariu:
We have been living with this virus for as long as mankind has existed and we can only avoid it by vaccination. We have this method and it is the first intention. Here, too, the recommendation is to vaccinate girls and boys, something that – countries as big as continents have proven to us – can be done and has an important efficiency. After that, as we progress in age, it’s good to go to the doctor and see all the screening options we can be a part of. And here it is not only about the cervix, but also the breast, for example, in ladies. And it is very good to investigate, because, of course, the faster we identify lesions or very early cancers, we can actually cure them.
Vaccination against HPV infection is safe and effective, with long-term health benefits, and it is recommended that the serum be given to both girls and boys starting at age 11, before sexual activity begins, the National Institute said. of Public Health, in the context in which in Romania it is estimated that 13.7% of diagnosed cancers are associated with persistent HPV infection.
Since the end of last year, access to the HPV vaccine has become easier.
Thus, immunization is free for girls and boys between the ages of 11 and 19, and for women between the ages of 19 and 45, the vaccine is compensated by 50%.
People under 15 years of age should receive 2 doses of the serum, at least 6 months apart, and people over 15 years of age should receive 3 doses over 6 months.
