HPV Vaccination Campaign by IMSS in Guanajuato: Preventing Cervical Diseases

Guanajuato. The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Guanajuato has implemented a vaccination campaign against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), aimed at various age groups and risk groups, with the aim of preventing cervical diseases.

The campaign is focused on girls who are in the fifth and sixth grades of primary school, as well as the first year of secondary school, in addition to those aged 11, 12 and 13 who are not enrolled in the national educational system. Cisgender and transgender women, ages 11 to 49, living with HIV are also included in this campaign.

Irma Ponce Trujillo, coordinator of Public Health Nursing of the IMSS in Guanajuato, highlighted the importance of this vaccination:

“HPV genotypes are classified as having low or high risk of causing cancer. 16 types of HPV have been characterized as high risk for cervical cancer, with types 16 and 18 being responsible for approximately 70% of all cervical neoplasms.

So far, more than 29 thousand doses have been applied out of a total of 61 thousand, which represents an advance of 49.9%. In addition, vaccination is being prioritized for lagging girls, between the second and third grade of secondary school or between the ages of 14 and 15, as long as they have not received at least one dose of HPV vaccine in previous years.

The strategy seeks to reduce the incidence of HPV infections in women, promoting vaccination before the start of active sexual life. The vaccines are being administered in previously agreed upon primary and secondary schools, as well as in vaccination modules in all the Institute’s Family Medicine Units, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

The IMSS in Guanajuato calls on the target population to take advantage of this preventive campaign and go to the designated points to receive this fundamental vaccine in the prevention of diseases associated with HPV.
