HPV and RV Vaccinations: Preparations and Impact on Public Health in Tasikmalaya City

Tasikmalaya – The Tasikmalaya City Government has begun preparations for the administration of human papilloma virus (HPV) and Rotavirus (RV) vaccinations. HPV vaccination is the prevention of uterine or cervical cancer, while RV is the prevention of diarrheal diseases.

HPV vaccination is given to girls of primary school age, while RV is given to babies aged 2, 3 and 4 months.

The community is expected to support the program because cervical cancer and diarrhea have so far affected public health status. Regarding the potential for post-immunization adverse events (KIPI) which often cause worry and hinder immunization, the Tasikmalaya City Government claims these two vaccinations are safe.

“That’s why there is a screening first, an examination first, an interview first. These are children who receive vaccinations, so their parents have to ask first. I don’t think people need to be afraid,” said the Regional Secretary of the Tasikmalaya City Government, Ivan Dicksan after attending the kick off implementation of the HPV vaccination and RV at a hotel on Jalan HZ Mustofa, Tasikmalaya City, Wednesday (9/8/2023).

The HPV and RV vaccinations are new vaccinations that are included in the mandatory immunization list for the community. So far there have been no cases of AEFI from this vaccination.

Head of the Tasikmalaya City Health Office Uus Supangat explained that the current target for HPV vaccination is 6,318 girls in grade 5 of elementary school.

“The target is 5th grade elementary school girls. They will be given 2 doses or two injections. This papilloma virus is the main cause of cervical cancer. So with this vaccination it is hoped that in the future cervical cancer cases will be zero,” said Uus.

He explained that this disease that attacks the uterus of a woman has a high risk. Of the 32 cases that have appeared in Tasikmalaya City in the past year, 5 of them have died. “Yes, it’s clearly dangerous, it can cause death or you have to take action to remove the uterus,” said Uus.

Meanwhile, for the RV vaccination, there were 10,473 babies who were targeted. This diarrheal disease vaccination is given 3 times.

Uus explained that diarrhea in children is closely related to stunting prevention efforts. Children with diarrhea will experience problems absorbing nutrients, which will eventually inhibit growth.

“Diarrhea also has a high risk and is a disease that must be watched out for because it can cause death. And what is no less important is also related to efforts to prevent stunting. When digestion or absorption of nutrients is good, of course children will grow well too,” said Uus .

Uus also said that in the community diarrhea is assumed to be a disease caused by bacteria, even though diarrhea can actually also be caused by viruses, in fact viruses are the main cause. “Viruses also cause diarrhea, some are caused by bacteria. But in fact, this diarrhea virus is the main cause of diarrhea,” said Uus.

Uus also said that the HPV and RV vaccinations had been included in the list of mandatory vaccinations that would be given to the public.
