The six-cylinder disappeared along with the sixth generation of the best-selling Volkswagen in history. In Canada, they dealt with this by installing a China-spec 2.5 VR6 turbocharged engine in the previous Golf R.
The first two generations of Golf R could boast an honest six-cylinder engine under the hood. The fourth and fifth editions of this German bestseller still relied on atmospheric filling, while the followers on the modular platform MQB they already came with turbocharged two-liter four-cylinders. Although they have more power, they still lack the character of a six-cylinder.
Canadian concern car adjuster HPA Motorsports however, he was able to combine the charisma of a larger engine with the performance of smaller aggregates. As part of the 50-piece series, it is for owners Volkswagen Golf R the seventh generation after modernization (specifically for the years 2018 and 2019) with a seven-speed DSG marked DQ 381 prepared a solution in the form of a turbocharged six-cylinder with a volume of 2.5 liters with the so-called VR concept with a very small opening angle of the cylinders.
Specifically, it is a unit with a label EA390which the German offers in Volkswagen Teramont in the Chinese market (sold in the United States as the Volkswagen Atlas). The engine is derived from the older three-liter, and its cylinders form an angle of only 10.6 degrees. Although the use of a larger unit with a volume of 3.6 liters was offered, in the end a smaller and lighter six-cylinder, which is more suitable for a fast hatchback, won. At HPA Motorsports, the 2.5-liter was finally tuned to 550 horsepower and 746 newton meters.
Golf R conversion program named HPA VR550T however, it includes a whole host of other serial status changes. With the larger HGP hybrid turbo engine, you also get, for example, a custom-built cylinder head, a sharper camshaft, a different intake, a larger intercooler and a seven-speed DSG with reinforced clutches. In addition, HPA will supply its own software, which allows you to play with the characteristics of the six-cylinder and can also influence the sound of the engine. Among the aesthetic elements, I can mention, for example, the carbon fiber engine cover and discreet emblems.
For all modifications, HPA Motorsports is asking for approx 936 thousand crowns. Of course, this does not include the acquisition of a refreshed Volkswagen Golf R of the previous generation. Considering the installation of a new and significantly modified engine, the result is not an exorbitant amount, even though you end up investing in an older car.
