HPA Motorsports Introduces VR6 Turbo Engine Conversions for Modern VW Golfs

VW’s VR engines are already a legend, and enthusiasts are paying tens of thousands of euros to now buy VR6 Golfs or other VR models that used the same engine family. Basically, they were V-shaped engines with such a small angle between the two groups of cylinders that they used a single cylinder head, like an engine with cylinders positioned in line. AND due to the small angle they made an unrepeatable sound. Well, HPA Motorsports in Canada has done the impossible and ordered 50 classic VR6 turbo engines, which they will modify and install on modern Golfs!

The engines are new, freshly manufactured, according to the original specification. When you have an older car, with many brands it is still possible to order even whole engines for many years, sometimes they are assembled from previously manufactured components, other times, if the demand is higher, they go through the production line completely once a several years, to replenish the stock. Somehow those from HPA managed to order exactly 50 such engines and when they received them at the headquarters they made the big announcement for VW fans, about the exceptional conversions they will do. And here the explanation lies in the fact that VW, even if it removed the VR6 engines from the Golf two decades ago, continued to produce some poses for some US models, including the VW Atlas until recently. And that’s how VW was still able to produce these classic engines.

The VR6 engine chosen was the 2.5 liter one, the larger versions not being chosen. The reason lies in the fact that the 2.5-liter engine is the only turbocharged VR from the factory, so it is equipped from the start for turbochargers, with all the correct intake and cooling channels. And that allowed HPA to apply a more powerful turbine and get 550 HP out of it!

Those from HPA Motorsport intend to mount it especially on the VW Golf R from the 7.5 generation. Thus, instead of the 300 HP engine under the hood, Golf R owners who want the conversion will receive 550 HP and the classic sound of the VR6, finally obtaining a car “as beautiful as it would have been from start”.

Those from HPA say that the engine, due to the high power, would only be compatible with DSG boxes, but they are analyzing the option of proposing a manual box soon. Anyway, the production is limited to only 50 units. In fact, it is a conversion of cars already owned by enthusiastic owners, not production. And the price of the conversion, which includes the labor, and the VR6 engine, and all the other adjustments, is about $40,000.

And something tells us that in the shortest time we will hear that all 50 orders will have already been received. And that’s also thanks to the impeccable reputation of HPA Motorsports, which guarantees that the modified model will work “like from the factory”, as if it was designed that way from the start.
