HP Faces Backlash for Secretly Shutting Down Official Website in Russia and Belarus

It has been more than two years since Russia invaded Ukraine. Many European and American companies evacuated Russia as early as 2022, and HP was one of them. They suspended their business in Russia and Belarus at that time. HP has finally completely withdrawn from the Russian market, including closing the local official website for downloading drivers and technical support. Local technology news website C-News criticized HP for shutting down its official website without warning.

C-News said that HP chose to do everything secretly and did not notify users that the website was about to shut down. The website said that Microsoft gave users about a week to find a new cloud service provider before leaving. C-News further mentioned the controversy caused by HP’s printer ink ordering policy and responded with “HP is boycotting Russia, but the whole world is boycotting HP.” HP actually announced its departure from the Russian and Belarusian markets as early as March 2022, even though the above two countries bring them about US$1 billion in annual revenue. Although HP stopped supplying goods to the two countries, the impact on them was not great because there are still parallel importers who continue to bring HP products to Russia and Belarus for sale.

After closing the official websites in Russia and Belarus, users visiting these two websites will be automatically taken to HP’s official website in Kazakhstan, where Russian is one of the two most commonly used languages. Users can continue to download drivers from the website, but they will not be able to obtain online support. HP once had a 36% share of the Russian printer market, but it dropped to 21% after suspending operations; now China’s Pantum ranks first in the market with a 53% share. Epson, which will also suspend supply in 2022, currently ranks second with a market share of 22.1%.
