Above all, the earthworks, concrete and masonry work for the shell construction, as well as 95 percent of the roofing, have been completed. The planting of the green roof is still missing. Many windows have already been installed, as well as the steel frames for the interior doors and the exterior doors up to the main entrance door. The thermal insulation composite system is in place. The preparatory work for the sanitary facilities, heating, electrics and drywall is done.

What construction work is currently going on on site?

At the moment it is about the screed work. The underfloor heating is being laid at the same time. The wooden facade is attached to the building. In addition, landscaping work begins in preparation for the outdoor facilities.

What are the total costs? Who wears them

The total cost of the new building is around two million euros. AWO Lausitz Pflege- und Betreuungs gGmbH, as the owner and sponsor of the facility, bears ten percent of the total construction costs. 75 percent of the costs of around 1.889 million euros are provided by the rural development program and 25 percent by the city of Hoyerswerda as the applicant for the funding. In addition, there is a contribution of 5,000 euros from the AWO for the design of the outdoor facilities.

Will there be any cost increases?

Yes, due to increases in material prices for building materials, insulation materials and wood, there were additional financial claims from various trades. Tenders that were carried out from the second quarter of 2021 onwards significantly exceeded the cost estimates.

How important is the new building for the content work?

Very important. The spatial conditions in the current daycare center “Krabat” are not ideal due to the multiple uses of the building – for example for a dentist’s practice and rental apartments. “The children and the educational staff have to repeatedly pass publicly used paths within the building. It is not a self-contained kindergarten in which the children can move around freely ”, says Mirko Pink. “Two of the four groups are housed in former rental apartments. The outside area can only be reached via the public courtyard. “

In the newly built daycare center not far from the church, workshop work, as stipulated by the Saxon education plan, will be possible. The children can, for example, be active in a small studio, in the construction room, in the role play room, in the sports room or in the creative workshop. The children’s restaurant offers space for meals together. In the children’s kitchen, the girls and boys can prepare their own meals. Each group has direct access to the garden. These and many other small details will have an enormously positive effect on the content of the work. For example, the group rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows. The children then no longer only see the sky, but also the immediate nature outside. The washrooms are directly accessible from the group rooms. This promotes the children’s independence. The newly built daycare center will be barrier-free in the future.

How important is the promotion of the Sorbian language on site?

Kita manager Birgit Leonhardt hopes for new impulses. “The Witaj project is an important part of the educational work in our day care center,” she explains. “We cultivate the Sorbian language, culture, costumes and customs of the region. The day care center ‘Krabat’ is an important part of Schwarzkollm village life. ”In the new day care center, the spatial conditions allow larger festivities such as the bird wedding to be traditionally celebrated. The theme of Krabat and the Sorbian roots of the place will be visible as soon as you enter the day care center. Two teachers are Sorbian language partners for the children at the day care center. Birgit Leonhardt is convinced: “Due to the new spatial conditions, the elimination of a staircase separating groups, all children will benefit from the Sorbian offer.”
