Jakarta –
Tank technologically advanced combat made in Germany and England, namely the Leopard 2 and Challenger 2has arrived at Ukraine. But it is predicted that this tank will not immediately be deployed to fight Russia. Why is that?
As reported, 18 units of Leopard 2 battle tanks were sent after the Ukrainian army was trained on how to use them. “I believe the tank will make a decisive contribution,” said German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
At the same time, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Oleksii Reznikov, announced on Twitter about the arrival of Challenger 2. He also thanked British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Defense Minister Ben Wallace. “These fantastic machines will soon begin their combat mission,” wrote Oleksii.
However, as quoted detikINET from Newsweek, Friday (31/3/2023) the two types of advanced tanks that Ukraine has long coveted may not be able to immediately carry out military operations. Because, there are weather factors that make it difficult.
Many areas in Ukraine are currently still covered in mud. Ukraine is known for a lot of mud in this season and makes it difficult for military vehicles to move, let alone heavy tanks.
“The weather is bad for such tanks, as they are too heavy. They will get stuck in the mud. It makes no sense to use them now,” said Marina Miron, researcher at King’s College London.
“Ukraine seems to be waiting, until the ground is solidified before launching an offensive, which will include tank attacks and others. Even though March is coming, it doesn’t mean that it will be used immediately in March as well,” said Mark Cancian of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
But precisely because of that, Ukraine can benefit because it can practice more before facing Russia on the real field. These tanks may later be used for counterattacks on Russian positions.
