The head of the English refereeing corps, Howard Webb, admitted that referee Simon Hooper made a mistake at the end of the recent Premier League match between Manchester City and Tottenham (3:3), depriving Jack Grealish of the opportunity to go one-on-one.
Then, at the end of stoppage time in the aforementioned match, Hooper allowed City to continue the game after a foul on Erling Haaland, but when Grealish was ready to escape one on one, he blew the whistle. The City players were extremely outraged by this, especially Haaland expressing his indignation.
Webb admits that Hooper was wrong in this situation.
“It’s a refereeing error. In this particular case, he sees a fairly forceful, reckless foul from Emerson Royal on Haaland. It happens in the center of the field and the ball bounces towards the defense. He goes through a careful thought process and hesitates for a moment to see if it stays “The injured party has the ball. Once he’s made up his mind and thought it over, he decides that he will show a yellow card for this forceful, reckless foul. It was very close to the end of the match, so I understand the disappointment of Manchester City in this case, because it would have been a great opportunity,” Webb summed up on Sky Sports.
