When illnesses occur, the health service at the IMSS covers the recovery process. Workers affiliated to the Institute are not the only ones who have this coverage. There is also an Facultative Insurance for students, it is a medical insurance scheme that the Institute grants, free of charge, to students. students of the public institutions of the levels upper middle, higher and postgraduate.
If you are a student, you can count on medical service. For that there is the Facultative Insurance for IMSS students. It is a very specific modality of those granted by the Institute. We explain what it consists of. According to the IMSS website, Facultative Insurance for students is the service provided by the institute to all people who are studying under any system, school or online.

There is no restriction for this service to be provided, it is enough that you are a student of a public institution of Mexico. The levels it includes are: baccalaureate or high school, bachelor’s degree, specialty, master’s or doctorate.
The first thing you should do is have your Partner Security Numberl (NSS), if you don’t have it, you can process it. For the procedure you have these options:
1. Through the website. Single:
- Have your CURP handy.
- An email account.
- Follow the instructions provided by the page.
2. Through the IMSS App
- Download the IMSS application on your cell phone,
- Have your CURP, proof of address and an email account handy.
- Generate your SSN in the Procedures and services session.
3. In person, if you go to any of the IMSS sub-delegations:
- Bring the same documents as in options 1 and 2.
- Your official identification and birth certificate.
Once you have your SSN, go to the school where you are a student and request that they register you in the IMSS as a student.
When you are already registered, register at the Family Medicine Unit (UMF) closest to your home. You can do it in two ways:
- In the Web page.
- Or go to the clinic (UMF) closest to your home.
The documents you must bring are:
- Official identification.
- CURP.
- Social Security number.
- Proof of address.
If you are a minor, identification is not necessary.

Characteristics of the Facultative Insurance for IMSS students
- It does not establish an age limit for the insured.
- The diseases treated in a medical, pharmaceutical and hospital way have no limits.
- The right to medical care will be valid only while you are discharged from the educational institution. When you finish your studies or are discharged, you will no longer be able to participate in the service, unless you continue studying at another public institution.
- The medical service at the IMSS is completely free, you just have to remain as an active student.
- If you are a student and pregnant, at the IMSS you have the right to medical, pharmaceutical and hospital care, until you and your baby are discharged after delivery.
- Public high school, undergraduate and graduate educational institutions must register their. students at the IMSS to receive medical attention.
Remember, many of the procedures have become very simple through the IMSS app or from its desktop version, without the need for you to move from home or stand in long lines.
