The events in Burgas, organized by the Municipality and its partners, dedicated to Jordan Day and the birth of the revolutionary poet, will begin on January 5 (Friday), at 6:00 p.m., in the Burgas Art Gallery “Petko Zadgorski”. There you can hear and see the musical and poetic performance “He is alive…” by the director Hristo Simeonov.
Traditionally, there are dozens of people willing to try their hand at the ritual of saving the Holy Cross. It symbolizes the baptism of Jesus Christ in the waters of the Jordan River by John the Baptist.
Those wishing to take part in the competition must be at least 16 years old. Registration will take place on the day itself, January 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. on the Mosta, only upon presentation of an identity card, a document for an up-to-date medical examination (medical) and signing a declaration accepting responsibility for health condition.
The Jordan Day celebrations will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, when His Eminence Bishop Ierothei of Agatopol – vicar of His Eminence Metropolitan Ioanikiy of Sliven, and the Burgas clergy, will celebrate a festive Holy Liturgy in the church of “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”.
On January 6, again according to an ancient tradition, the military units and battle flags of the Bulgarian army are consecrated. This ritual is believed to have started in 917, when the first water festival was held before the Battle of Acheloi. After some hiatus, it was resumed in 1879 and continues to this day.
The blessing of the battle flags of the Military Garrison – Burgas and the prayer for health will be celebrated by His Eminence Bishop Ierothei of Agathopol and will begin at 11:00 a.m. at St. St. Cyril and Methodius”.
The ritual of throwing the Holy Cross into the sea will start at 12:00.
January 6 marks the 176th anniversary of the birth of revolutionary poet Hristo Botev. He will be honored with flowers and wreaths at 12:30 in front of his monument in Primorski Park.
From 1:00 p.m., the 25th jubilee exhibition “Epiphany” of the three artists Yordan Marinov, Yordan Petrov and Yordan Angelov will be opened in the salon of the Society of Burgas Artists.
