Mycologist and researcher of the Latvian National Museum of Nature Diāna Meiere claims that forecasting the amount of mushrooms is a rather complicated thing.
“A lot is not yet known about mushrooms. Exactly how it will affect mushrooms, mushroom mycelium, mycelium, what grows in the soil, it is very difficult for us to say,” says the researcher.
Meiere explains that the severe drought should not interfere with mushroom productivity in the fall. The main factor on which mushroom growth depends is the amount of rain.
If Latvia experiences heavy rains in the next month, the mycelium in the fertilized soil will recover and the fungi will sow spores.
Pictures of the success of mushrooms can already be found on social networks, which also confirms what the researcher said – with the end of summer, full mushroom baskets will not be missing.
Meiere recommends paying attention not only to edible mushrooms such as mushrooms or chanterelles, but also to other, less attractive and inedible mushrooms. The researcher compares them to bird watching.
