In 2006, for the first time, a cat found dead was identified as a wild cat after a genetic analysis. Since then, the strictly protected species has been spreading again in Baden-Württemberg.
BZ: Where is the main occurrence in Baden-Württemberg?
Streif: The wildcat spread quite quickly along the entire Rhine track from France, Switzerland and the Palatinate Forest. There are also populations in the Odenwald and in the Main-Tauber district that immigrate from neighboring regions. And wherever they find a networked living space. In southern Baden we have comparatively large deposits in Markgräflerland and Kaiserstuhl, as well as in the urban area around Freiburg.
