After the US, the UK has now also approved the corona pills. The EU is also likely to give the green light to the virus inhibitors Paxlovid from Pfizer and Molnupiravir (aka Lagevrio) from Merck soon as well. But how effective are those resources?
According to a study, Pfizer’s pill is particularly successful. The pill reduces the risk of hospitalization and death by as much as 89 percent. In that case, it must be taken within a few days of the first symptoms. Merck’s pill is a lot less powerful and only protects for 30 percent.
The first signs are that the pills also work against the omicron variant. Until now, the use of the pill in the EU has only been allowed in emergencies, but governments have already placed a number of orders pending approval.
