Before Alfa Romeo became part of Stellantis, there was in fact the possibility of the Italian brand becoming the property of Volkswagen. Autocar reports reveal the news, with Ferdinand Piech as the main protagonist.
As early as 2011, the then director of the German company was trying to reach a deal with Alfa Romeo, and his offer was met with a firm “no” by the Italian company.
Despite the categorical answer, in 2018 the Volkswagen Group again announced its desire to buy the Italian brand, and even the then directors of the two companies met, but only to make it clear that Alfa Romeo is not for sale and there can be no deal.
The then director of Volkswagen said that he felt obliged to continue Piech’s task, but this never came to pass.
