How Voice Choices and Animation Changes Shaped “Well, Wait for it!” Cartoon

It’s creepy to watch.

“Wait for it!” could have turned out completely different if not for the choice of an actor to voice the wolf uttering the famous phrase. Initially, director Vyacheslav Kotenochkin wanted the voice of the wolf to belong to Vladimir Vysotsky. However, for obvious reasons, he was not approved for the role.

“The Arts Council did not approve of him, explaining that Vysotsky is an odious figure. After some time I met Vladimir and Marina Vladi. He asked: “Slavik, when will we start working?” I replied: “Never. You are an odious figure and have a detrimental effect on our Soviet youth,” — said the creator of “Well, wait a minute!”

Thus, the wolf received the voice of Papanov, who coped with the voice acting of his character brilliantly and hit the bull’s eye.

But this is not the only change that radically influenced the final “look” of the cartoon. Initially, the panache “Well, wait a minute!” Gennady Sokolsky, who worked as an animator, including on the film “Winnie the Pooh is Coming to Visit,” was supposed to do the work.

However, his interpretation of the new cartoon caused a negative reaction from Soviet censors. Sokolsky refused to make changes and left the project. Judge for yourself: was it worth redrawing such a wolf? Most likely, Sokolsky was stubborn in vain.

Later, Vyacheslav Kotenochkin agreed to take over the drawing and created the version of “Well, wait a minute!”, which young and not so young viewers love and know to this day.
