How verbs are reinterpreted by flapping their wings in the Jewish Museum Berlin

BerlinA pigeon flies through the middle of the classroom. Behind it, a group of people is sitting in front of a blackboard with Hebrew characters. They leaf through texts and look spellbound at their laptops. Does the dove in this picture by the photographer Frédéric Brenner refer to the memorable title “Zerheilen” of the prelude to the empire “Chewruta” (friendship) in the Jewish Museum Berlin?

In any case, the title seems like a memorable hybrid of “destroy” and “heal”, with the powerful semantics of “Zer-” being reinterpreted into a tender verb as if by flapping the wings. The focus of this first event in the Chewruta series is the topic of “memory / place”.

Using texts by Barbara Honigmann, Pierre Nora and others, Yemima Hadad, Netanel Olhoeft, Dekel Peretz and Barbara Steiner will discuss with the audience what a local memory could be and to what extent places are shaped by memory.

The round table of the “Chewruta” is not on a stage, but in the center of the room. Visitors should have access to actively participate in the discussion.

Chewruta: Healing, An invitation to learn together. On October 6th, 7.30 p.m., in the Jewish Museum Berlin, Lindenstrasse 9-14. Registration under: www.jmberlin.de
