Weapons provided by the West, as well as growing experience, have hardened Ukraine’s air defenses, and it currently manages to shoot down between 90 and 100 percent of Russian missiles aimed at its territory, The Washington Post reports.
The strengthened defenses prevented Russian aircraft from penetrating deep behind the front lines and “significantly shaped the course of the war,” argued Ian Williams in an analysis for the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), “Focus” reported.
Since April 28, Russia has launched a total of 67 missiles and 114 drones against Ukraine, according to Ukrainian Air Force reports. Only seven rockets and 11 drones managed to penetrate the defenses, but not a single projectile hit Kiev.
Last week, the military in the Ukrainian capital even announced that they had shot down Russia’s most advanced hypersonic missile, the Dagger, a weapon previously thought to be unstoppable. But the American Patriot battery, newly acquired by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, made it possible.
It is noted that in the first months, Ukraine intercepted about 50% of Russian missiles. Thanks to the arrival of new Western air defense systems in October and November, as well as the increase in the skills of Ukrainian batteries, it has subsequently become possible to intercept about 80% of Russian cruise missiles.
Today, this figure is close to 90%, and as for the missiles fired at Kiev, the destroyed projectiles are 100%.
