Jakarta (ANTARA) –
Many circulating on social media are referring to smelly and bleeding toilet tissue as the cause of fungal infections.
Writing on the Well and Good page, Thursday (31/10), women’s sexual health expert Sherry Ross MD OB/GYN said that toilet paper in general does not cause fungal infections.
“Although each person has different sensitivities, toilet paper manufacturing practices have incorporated safety guidelines to protect people from ingesting a number of harmful chemicals into the body,” said Dr. . Ross stressed.
This means that not all brands of toilet paper will cause irritation. Toilet paper made with fragrance, chlorine bleach, and other potentially harmful additives, such as petroleum-based dyes, can cause skin irritation and discomfort in some people, says Dr. Ross
One old case study from 2010 in Canadian Family Physician examined a woman who got rid of a yeast infection after replacing bleached toilet paper with non-bleached toilet paper. However, this is just one case that hasn’t been repeated in over a decade, so more research needs to be done.
“If you have recurring yeast infections, there’s no harm in looking for brands that are fragrance-free, dye-free, fragrance-free, or made with natural ingredients to reduce the risk of irritation and discomfort reduce,” he says.
Because yeast infections can be caused by a dozen different reasons (literally), including eating habits, the immune system, and clothing choices.
