With 50 films in the trunk of the police car, it can be difficult to keep track of the order. But don’t worry, MovieZine is here to help and keep track.
The year was 1997 and the premiere of a series of new films based on May Sjöwall and By choice characters, but not on their books. Few could have guessed that the series would last 27 years later.
Some characters were familiar from the books and the previous films. Martin Beck himself, of course. Gunvald Larsson. Benny Skacke. Although for the most part it was a new gallery of characters that had to depict a more modern and rawer reality for the police.
From the beginning it was meant to Gosta Ekman would play Martin Beck in the new original films, having done the role in six films based on the books. But he dropped out and made way for Peter Newswhich along with Ingvar Hirdwalls Wayward Neighbors are the only ones to appear in all fifty films.
The films are self-contained so of course you don’t have to watch them all in the right order, or even watch them all. But for those who still want to, there are backstories to follow, characters that develop and relationships that grow. An added value for the ardent enthusiast, in other words.
