How to use WhatsApp’s new feature, photos and videos disappear after viewing

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Instant messaging app WhatsApp has launched the View Once feature for beta users and is not yet available to all users.

This feature can send photos or videos that can only be viewed once and will disappear once viewed. Although it is only available to beta users, the recipient of the message does not have to be a beta user to be able to receive the message at a time.

This new feature can only be used on individual messages and cannot be used on group messages.

Here’s how to use WhatsApp’s new feature, photo and video messages disappear after viewing.

1. Select the photo or video to send
2. Click the number 1 button with a circle to the left of the submit button to activate the lost after view feature. Click again to disable the feature.
3. If the photo-video feature is deleted after viewing is activated, the photo or video will not display the image immediately. Instead the recipient will get a notification with the caption “photo” or “video” with the number 1.
4. If the recipient has opened the message, the photo and video notification description will change to “opened”.

The feature was first revealed by Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg in an “unexpected” group chat with WABetaInfo.

The View Once feature is a new feature that makes photos and videos that users send will disappear after being viewed. This feature was first developed by Snapchat which causes files to expire after being viewed by other users.

If you tap the info feature on a sent message, users can see when the recipient of the message received and view the message. However, if the recipient doesn’t enable the blue check mark as the message has been read, the sender can only see whether the photo or video message has been opened or not.

It should be noted that the recipient can still save the photo or video by taking a screenshot or recording it using another device.

Quoted Android Central, that feature is now available for beta on Android. In the coming weeks, the feature is also expected to make its way to the beta channel on iOS.

WhatsApp had previously launched disappearing messages in November 2020. The messages can disappear seven days after they were sent.

Quoted India Today, View Once is an extension of the disappearing messages feature WhatsApp launched last year.

Currently, the feature can only be enabled for individual chat rooms. However, in the near future, WhatsApp is rumored to be activating the missing messages feature in all chat rooms.

When in an individual chat, any of the users can enable or disable missing messages. But in group chat, only group admin can set missing message feature.

Facebook parent company CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently talked about disappearing mode for WhatsApp. However, the feature that is being launched is more like Snapchat which disappears as soon as it is seen.

WhatsApp is slated to roll out other features soon such as multi-device login support with end-to-end encryption. This feature allows users to log into one WhatsApp account using multiple devices at the same time.
