How to Use WhatsApp’s New Chat Lock Feature for Privacy and Security

WhatsApp some time ago released a new feature called chat lock. This feature provides a layer of privacy to protect certain chats.

Users can hide private chats that can only be opened using device authentication, such as a phone passcode, Face ID, fingerprint or secret code.

By activating this feature, other people who open WhatsApp on your device will not know or open chats that have been hidden.

How to activate the chat lock feature

1. On a mobile device, swipe left or long press the chat you want to lock.

2. Tap more options or more options > Chat lock.

3. Tap Lock this chat with fingerprint or Lock This Chat with Face ID.

Hide locked Chat folders

To hide the locked Chats folder from appearing in the chat list, go to the locked Chats folder > Settings, then turn on Hide locked chats.

View locked chats

1. Open the Chats tab, then scroll down to tap Locked chats.

  • If you hide the locked Chats folder, enter the secret code into the Search bar and then tap Locked chats.

2. Confirm Face ID or touch the fingerprint sensor to unlock.

3. Tap chat to view or send messages.

Turn off chat lock

1. Swipe left or long press the chat you want to unlock.

2. Tap more options or more options > Unlock chat.

3. Turn off and confirm your fingerprint or Face ID.

This newest WhatsApp feature has also become a hot topic of conversation on social media. This is because it is feared that this key chat feature could be misused.

It is feared that the locked chat could be used as a communication tool for extramarital affairs.
