How to use Soundmojis in Facebook Messenger

Now it’s getting loud – in your Facebook Messenger. Because the social platform launched Soundmojis: Emojis that make the right sounds. We’ll show you how to use the new audio smileys.

Will this be the next audio trend? In line with World Emoji Day on July 17, 2021, Facebook launched a new type of emojis for Messenger: The Soundmojis. These are emojis that emit a sound that matches the depicted feeling. That is, if someone sends the drum emoji, a drum will sound. Facebook explains in one Blogpost:

[…] what is a Soundmoji? It’s a next-level emoji that lets you send short sound clips in a Messenger chat, ranging from clapping ????, crickets ????,drumroll ????, and evil laughter ????, to audio clips from your favorite artists […] and your favorite TV shows and movies[…].

The social group states that up to 2.4 billion messages that contain an emoji are sent via Messenger every day. The sound mojis are designed to make the conversation livelier. In addition to common sounds such as clapping, laughing and crickets chirping, users can also hear iconic sounds from various films – such as from the new action flick “The Fast and the Furious 9“- and embed series – for example from the comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine – in their chats.

To use the Soundmojis, simply open your Facebook Messenger app and go into a chat. Click on the smiley in the lower right corner of the input field and then go to the loudspeaker icon. Then select which Soundmoji you want to send. You can listen to the audio smileys again before sending them to make sure that you really want to send this sound.

It remains to be seen whether the new sound mojis will also become established with other messenger services. Because, especially when out and about, many users use chat or social apps without sound. Emojis that make noises could possibly ignore the needs of the target group.
