How-to: This is how you make money on TikTok

If you want to earn money on TikTok, you now have a few options. We present the different options and the respective requirements.

The high-flyer app TikTok has not only dominated the download charts for years, the app is also working hard to offer users as many options as possible when it comes to monetization. There are currently five ways you can make money on TikTok. We’ll introduce them all to you below.

Creator Fund

A year ago – in August 2020 – TikTok launched the Creator Fund. An initiative in which $ 200 million is to be paid out to a wide variety of creators. The fund is even expected to grow to one billion US dollars in the next three years. However, not all TikTokers are paid from the fund. Users must have over 10,000 followers and at least 100,000 views in the past 30 days. So far, only a few prominent influencers have reported payouts. These ranged between two and four cents per 1,000 views. Users can apply for inclusion via the app by going to Settings and Privacy> Creator Tools on TikTok Creator Fund click.

Creator Marketplace

The Creator Marketplace is intended to promote collaboration between brands and creators. Brands that are interested in a collaboration can search for suitable creators via the platform by filtering them by country, age, niche, etc. They then make an offer to clarify the payment and scope of the desired campaign. Creators can decide directly whether they want to accept or decline the offer. It is still relatively unclear according to which criteria creators will be included in the marketplace. On the website it just means that eligible creators will receive an invitation.

Influencing Marketing

Those who are not officially approved for the marketplace can make do with traditional influencer marketing. For example, creators have been making their money on Instagram for years. TikToker can also approach brands and ask about cooperation options. They could present and rate products in their posts, publish sponsored posts or create content for the company’s account. However, care must always be taken to clearly mark the collaboration and to deal with it transparently if a contribution is sponsored.

LIVE Gifting

TikToker must also have a certain number of followers for the LIVE Gifting option. Users can only host a live stream as soon as they have over 1,000 followers and are over 16 years old. To receive so-called gifts, users must be over 18 years old.

Viewers of a live stream can send diamonds in the meantime. One diamond is roughly equivalent to five cents. At the end of a live stream, TikToker can see an overview of how many diamonds have been sent to you. TikTok itself keeps 50 percent of the revenue made this way, which means that for every 100 diamonds TikTokers end up receiving $ 2.50. While a lot can come together in this way with large follower numbers, Live Gifts should not generate large sales for most creators.

Merchandise

TikTok has been testing the integration of Teespring on its own platform for about a year. Selected creators can use it to sell their own merch and thus earn money indirectly via the app. But even without belonging to the selected group, TikToker can use the link in their bio to refer to other pages on which they sell their own products.

So far, all monetization options that officially come from TikTok are only accessible to creators with many followers. But so many new options have emerged in the past twelve months for Creators to make money through the app that we can expect just as much to happen in the months ahead. Until then, everyone who tends to have fewer followers must take action themselves and land their deals.
