The Hellenic Open University announces the following:
In continuation of the previous announcements, we would like to inform the academic community of our University about the actions of the Foundation so far regarding the malicious attack that the Hellenic Open University recently received :
• From the first moment of the incident (25/10/2024) both the National Cyber Security Authority and the Cyber Crime Prevention Directorate were notified. The update is ongoing.
Event Management Team established.
•The Personal Data Protection Authority (PDPA) was immediately notified of the incident. The original statement has been updated according to the data.
The institution’s Technical Services, in collaboration with a specialized company, took all immediate actions to deal with the incident and limit its impact. In particular, on the same day (25/10/2024) the incident was isolated (the affected systems were shut down).
To date there is no documented evidence that confirms the release of personal data.
It goes without saying that, in the context of the responsible and transparent management of the event, the university administration will inform the community regularly, as it has done so far.
Regarding the academic function of the University:
Within a minimum period of time (two days) the University’s website was restored.
After the necessary security checks, student contact with the Professional Advisors has been implemented in all Subject Units, and Group Advisory Meetings are held regularly.
Critical infrastructures and services were first restored to enable the technical functioning of e-learning platforms. These are already working while they are checking and updating the data in progress.
• The re-opening of other administrative services (project management by ELKE, staff payroll, etc.) is underway.
It is believed that the institution’s academic activities will be fully restored by the beginning of next week.
Thank you all for your understanding and valuable support.
